Budget Planning Progress

Jessica here. Well our shopping trip gave me plenty of information to sift through and make use of. I have skipped drawing flats for now and I am just going over each piece in my head and figuring out the details. I have all of the fabric estimations and today I am working on a notion list and finding some of the fabrics online that we couldn't find at S.R. Harris. I was able to find some really nice options for insulation fabrics so that our fall line can really be practical for the mid-western weather and was also able to find one fabric that both Christina and I were set on in our head but were having a hard time finding. Once the notion list is done we are pretty much set to buy what we need.

When we have the fabrics I will be able to finish coloring in the sketches which is exciting because for the first time we will be able to get a pretty good idea how the line will look together.

I am getting very excited to start moving out of the planning stages and into some action. We have a lot to do before September.

our line

. . . and here is a little teaser of our line!

Fabric research!

Jessica and I went to SR Harris tonight to do some research on what they have right now and prices for our budget. As I speak, Jessica is estimating yardage and cost! We found about 90% of what we need and gathered lots of samples. It really helps us to visualize the whole line . . .

My next Job

Well now that the fashion illustrations are as far as they can go and I have had a good nights sleep it is time to start thinking about the next project.
I am going to start hand drawing flats. In this day and age a lot of people in the fashion industry use Adobe Illustrator to draw their flats but because that is something that we do not have yet by hand is what it is going to be. (Actually I like drawing by hand just as much, if not more, then doing it on the computer.)
The flats will enable us to have a better understanding of how each garments will be made, how much fabric will be needed for each piece and what notions (accessories like zippers and buttons) we will need. This is one of my last steps in planning before I head into the not so interesting part of finalizing our budget.
So I am off to get a little bit done before I head off to the day job.

Christina and I will be working tonight so if there is something interesting going on we will let you know.

What I am working on

Hi, Christina here. While Jessica has been busy putting our designs on paper, I have been busy with yarn! I am creating original patterns for knitted and crocheted accessories to go with our awesome outfits. As you can imagine, this takes a little longer. While Jessica has finished all of our drawings, I have only completed accessories for one outfit! And actually, they are just samples. We have yet to purchase the final yarn.
The accessories I just made were crocheted, which is my favorite of the two. I love that it has never been, nor could it be, mechanized. Sooooo cool.
Now I think I need to switch to some knitting. My crocheting muscles are getting sore!

Catching up and Today

So here is what has been happening so far....

The designs are done other then the small details that will change as we work out the construction details.
A little bit of what to expect. This line has subtle hints of inspiration from 80's dance wear and vintage circus outfits. Now don't go running screaming we have tastefully combined these elements in outfits that can be worn in a variety of situations. We have day wear outfits, business wear, semi formal, and formal. Just about everything a girl could need right? All of the outfits are decked out with knit wear (better then jewelry in this mid-west weather).
After the initial designs were figured out Christina and I split up and started working on separate projects although most of the time we are working together. Christina is working on figuring out all the patterns for the knit wear and I am working on finalizing the fashion illustrations for the line.
Today it is easy to visualize our outfits being worn I'm sure as the weather warms up it will be harder to see. Today it is gray with freezing rain gross. But Christina and I are warm inside watching Sex and the City and working on our respective projects. Well at least Christina is I am procrastinating and writing this. My two cats are also entertaining us.

About us

Hello and welcome to our blog! Jessica Penny and I (Christina Bussler) met in the Spring of 2003 at the University of MN where we were both studying design. Jessica's senior line focused on bridal wear, while I took a different direction and designed a line of maternity clothing. After Graduating, Jessica worked on a movie in Door County where she was the Set Costumer. I joined a committee at Goodwill to help with their Second Runway fashion show, as well as design for it.
Now Jessica and I have started "of Venus and Gaia", a clothing and accessory brand for the fashionable mid-western lady.
We started this blog so you could follow our progress as we design a line and plan a show for Fall Fashion week 2010!
You can look forward to hearing from both Jessica and myself as well as guest bloggers who are hanging out with us as we work.
